Marlin McKay Trio

Currently the Assistant Professor of High Brass and Director of Jazz and Commercial Music at the historic Kentucky State University, Marlin McKay has a sound and style all his own, full of graceful melodies and soulful sounds that reflects his two greatest influences – Nicholas Payton and Tom Harrell. His love of Hard Bop makes him a natural choice to present jazz to listeners and aficionados both young and seasoned.

Marlin has relished in national and international acclaim having recently placed, First Runner Up, in the National Trumpet Competition Jazz Division, and has also been a participant in the prestigious jazz residencies of the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program, as well as, the Stean’s Institute for Young Artists, located in Washington D.C. and Ravinia Illinois respectively.

He has recorded one album under his own name, Deep in the Cosmos and his sophomore release, The Look.

RC and the Nightshades

This band of veteran musicians is very popular in the Central Kentucky area, playing to large audiences with their original songs and many familiar hits as well. They have performed at the Governor’s Derby Day Party in Frankfort, The annual Blues Between the Bridges Festival numerous times, the 2016 Lexington Roots and Heritage Festival, 2016 Lexington Music Awards Show, and many other venues.

The band’s newest release is 2017’s “Made in the Shade” a 12-song album and an earlier release, a 2014 album entitled “Snakebit” were submitted for Grammy consideration by their record label, Altus Records. Both albums actually were approved by the Academy screening committee and placed on the Grammy ballots in the American Roots category.

RC and the NightShades has been nominated Best Blues Band for three years in a row in the Lexington Music Awards, and in 2018, band leader Ronn Crowder was the recipient of the Lexington Music Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring his extensive career in the music business.
